The first training for the initiative “Family Friendly University” was successfully conducted in Sumy State University. Training participants became experts of department of social and extracurricular work of the university. The purpose of the training was for participants to develop the skills necessary for implementing family friendly policies in their respective cities.

The training was developed using the best practices of the International Trade Organization and was conducted as part of the framework for the project “Equal opportunities in getting profession for young mother-students in higher educational establishments.” This project is one the key components of the “Family Friendly University” initiative.

The series of trainings in Sumy State University confirmed the relevance of this work and once again showed that through cooperation, the required resources to create family friendly environments can be always found.

In particular, the training included:

- A presentation on the experience of Sumy State University and best international practices in implementing family friendly initiatives;

- interactive sessions that demonstrated the importance of the issue and raised awareness about the difficulties faced by students who are balancing study and family responsibilities;

-  a presentation that dispelled common myths and misconceptions regarding the combination of study and family responsibilities;

- a presentation that helped participants develop an understanding of family friendly policy;

- the development of individual action plans, in order for each participant to implement specific family friendly policies in their business or organization.

After the first training, participants were able to discuss the various advantages and significance of family friendly approaches, and could analyze current opportunities at the university for combining professional interests with family. While working with the students every day, experts of the department of social and extra curricular work know that the unique life situation of each individual can define his or her opportunities. Thus, creating a supportive environment in Sumy State University should promote equality. Although there are many stereotypes and much skepticism around this topic in Ukraine, participants of the training agreed that changes must start with each individual taking action, as soon as possible.

One of the main barriers to creating family friendly initiatives is the absence of empathy towards young mothers and families in general. This means that a change in attitude towards families must take place, and people must consider the importance of balancing professional and family roles. Participants agreed that individual professional interests influence family life, and vice versa. A balanced combination has advantages for both professors and staff.

During the training, participants were able to apply their new knowledge by developing an idea for a future project that will demonstrate family friendliness in Sumy State University. Participants developed a detailed plan of the idea, the target group, the ways and methods of implementation, the predicted results, possible risks and ways to overcome them. This allowed the participants to recognize their own ability to utilize existing resources and the expertise of others.

The training which is a hallmark of the project will be offered to university administrations in Ukraine in early 2014.
