The "Family friendly University" initiative was reflected in 3 projects’ manuals

Three manuals were issued within the project “Equal opportunity in getting profession for young mother-students in higher educational establishments”: “The balance between study and family: providing opportunities in higher educational establishments”, “Formation of gender-responsible behavior of the youth (on the examples of Ukrainian universities)”, “Extended Initiative "Family friendly University": experience and results of the implementation in Sumy State University”.

FAMILY FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY MODEL

The structural components of the family friendly university model are:

  • flexible organization of the learning and working process in the university;
  • creation of child friendly environments in HEE;
  • information and advisory support;
  • initiatives that promote the “family friendly university” model;
  • social support for people with family commitments;
  • programs for maintaining health in HEE / in the workplace.

The structure of the model and operating conditions.

The "Friendly family university" model provides implementation of a broad range of initiatives at the university level, including:

■ Flexible organization of the learning and working processes in the university, which can consist of using Internet technologies (online distribution of lectures, materials, and assignments; ability to perform tasks via the Internet; distance learning), individual scheduling of assignments, and flexible class attendance, etc.

■ Creation of a child friendly environment in HEE, which can consist of childcare rooms, swaddling places at the university, ability to move baby-strollers on-campus (existence of ramps, parking places for baby-strollers, bicycles, etc.), and a range of specific child services (feeding chairs, child menus / child dishes in the university dining room, assistance in finding nannies, etc.).

■ Information and advisory support (psychological, pedagogical, medical, and judical counseling, etc.), training courses for the development of a tolerant, friendly atmosphere in the family, conflict resolution skills, training on how to combine family and professional commitments, and dissemination of information through electronic distribution.

■ The promotion of the “family friendly university” model among stakeholders, which consists of advertising current events and the wide range of services using a rich variety of media channels: electronic resources (initiative website), advertisement boards, available media, cooperation with student governments, etc.

■ Social support for people with family commitments (providing rooms for families in student hostels, child recreation, assistance in submitting documents, providing financial assistance, volunteer support) through the involvement of trade unions, student social services, and student government activists.

■ Programs for maintaining health in HEE/in the workplace (safe learning/work conditions, playgrounds, clubs (including clubs for children), mass sports and recreational activities).

The above mentioned initiatives are implemented in variousaspects of university life, including:

  • teaching process,
  • science,
  • educational process,
  • management,
  • extracurricular work,
  • informational-communicational activities,
  • personal self-development,
  • financial rewards and non-monetary benefits,
  • services for families,
  • advanced training,
  • links with employers, public organizations.

The main motivation for introducing the "Family Friendly University" model is:

• increasing the attractiveness of the university for researchers and students;

• supporting high motivation and work/training productivity in the university;

• creating a positive climate in the staff-team and establishing communicative links;

• maintaining and strengthening the capacity of faculty and students;

• preserving the health of workers and students, including mothers and children;

• providing professional training of high quality for students with children, which is a prerequisite for future economic security of women and their families;

• preventing staff turnover and keeping students from transferring to distance learning.
